PHILADELPHIA, PA — As part of a $7.8 million project, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has confirmed that road and bridge construction will continue next week on the overhead ramp and structure extending from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue). This construction work is part of an extensive project taking place in Philadelphia’s Hunting Park area.
From Monday, January 8, to Friday, January 12, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM each day, motorists can expect a partial left lane closure on the northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) ramp at Old York Road. This closure is necessary for essential roadway improvements, curb modifications, and drainage enhancement work.
In addition, there will be periodic single left lane closures on both northbound and southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Wyoming Avenue and 16th Street. These closures, also active from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM from January 8 to January 12, are for barrier installation and shoulder work.
Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and consider alternate routes during these times as significant backups are expected. All scheduled activities under this contract remain subject to weather conditions.
It’s crucial to note that the southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) ramp will remain closed around the clock until Monday, January 22. During this period, southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) motorists will be redirected to use Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to access U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).
The existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge carrying the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) will be replaced under this project. In its place, a single-span, prestressed, precast concrete bridge will be constructed, offering additional vertical clearance.
The project also includes the construction of retaining wall extensions on the approaches to the new bridge, performing full-depth paving, and installing and constructing a new sidewalk, ADA curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderail, and pavement markings.
South State, Inc., a Bridgeton, N.J.-based company, is the general contractor for this project. The entire project is being financed with federal funds.
