WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled a comprehensive $63.7 million project to refurbish nearly 17 miles of Interstate 476, including its associated ramps and bridges. The stretch from West Conshohocken Borough in Montgomery County to Ridley Township in Delaware County is set for extensive resurfacing, repair, and improvement.
Next week, night-time work begins with bridge deck repair and inlet replacement on the southbound lanes. On Tuesday, January 2, motorists can expect a single lane closure on various sections of I-476, both northbound and southbound, between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Similar closures are scheduled from Wednesday, January 3, through Friday, January 5, but with an earlier start time of 8:00 PM.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time as delays and backups are anticipated in the work areas. All planned activities are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
The extensive project will see PennDOT’s contractor, H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, mill and overlay I-476 travel lanes and shoulders in both directions. A whopping 49 structures will undergo repairs, and 21 stormwater management basins will be improved to address existing rock slope stabilization issues. In addition, sound walls will be repaired, inlets at select locations replaced, and new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail installed.
The purpose of this significant undertaking is to extend the design life of the interstate and enhance ride quality and safety. It also aims to improve the current condition of roadside elements like stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderail, and signs that are presently in poor condition.
Funded entirely by federal dollars, the project is expected to reach completion in late 2025. As PennDOT embarks on this endeavor, the hope is that these improvements will provide a safer and smoother travel experience for all who traverse Interstate 476.
