MIDDLETOWN TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is making progress on a $10.6 million effort to enhance traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve safety at the intersections of Langhorne-Yardley Road, Bridgetown Pike, and Woodbourne Road in Middletown Township, Bucks County.
Starting Monday, March 3, weekday travel restrictions will be in place from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM through late April at the following areas:
- Woodbourne Road between Kilburn Road and the Core Creek Park driveway entrance.
- Langhorne-Yardley Road between Bridgetown Pike and Briggs Road.
Motorists should prepare for delays and are advised to allow extra travel time when passing through these construction areas. All work is weather-dependent.
The centerpiece of the project involves constructing a single-lane roundabout at Langhorne-Yardley Road and Bridgetown Pike, replacing the existing signalized T-intersection. This design aims to enhance safety by reducing vehicular speeds and streamlining traffic flow while providing safer conditions for all road users. Once construction of the roundabout begins, motorists will be redirected to a detour route.
Additional improvements are planned at the Langhorne-Yardley Road and Woodbourne Road intersection, including realigning the northern section of Woodbourne Road and incorporating auxiliary turn lanes on all approaches. To further support traffic efficiency, the eastern leg of Woodbourne Road will be widened, adding a left-turn lane on Langhorne-Yardley Road near Erica Drive.
Other upgrades include minor vertical alignments to improve sightlines between Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road, as well as lane and shoulder adjustments to accommodate smoother traffic flow.
PennDOT’s project also emphasizes pedestrian and bicyclist mobility with several key features:
- Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at pedestrian crossings, including Langhorne-Yardley Road near Briggs Road, and Woodbourne Road near Core Creek Park and Maple Point Middle School.
- Five-foot-wide paved shoulders for enhanced bike access.
- Newly paved paths to connect intersections with the Core Creek Park entrances.
- Sidewalks along the southern side of Langhorne-Yardley Road from Woodbourne Road to Briggs Road.
- Added pedestrian-friendly elements at both the roundabout and signalized crossings.
This comprehensive infrastructure overhaul is expected to enhance safety and accessibility for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike, while accommodating growing travel demands in the area.
