Pedestrian Fatally Struck in Newark Accident on New Year’s Day

NEWARK, DE — A pedestrian was tragically killed in a collision early Wednesday morning on East Chestnut Hill Road, prompting an ongoing investigation by Delaware State Police.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:14 a.m. when a 2013 silver Kia Optima traveling westbound in the left lane struck a 32-year-old male pedestrian from New Castle. The man, who was reportedly walking in the roadway and wearing dark-colored clothing, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have withheld his identity pending family notification.

The driver of the Kia, a 36-year-old Newark resident, and two passengers, aged 14 and 17, were not injured in the accident. The circumstances leading up to the collision are under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit.

East Chestnut Hill Road was closed for approximately four hours as police conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.
