Pavement Preservation Work Set for Route 222 in Lancaster County

Traffic Alert

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a significant pavement preservation project on Route 222, covering sections in Lancaster and Berks Counties. Work is scheduled to begin on Sunday, April 6, and is expected to continue through February 2, 2026.

The project focuses on Route 222 between the Mohler Church Road overpass in Ephrata Township and Col. Howard Boulevard at the Denver/PA Turnpike Exit in East Cocalico Township. It also includes the construction of a new entrance to the northbound Route 222 weigh station, situated between the Lancaster County line and the Adamstown/Knauers Exit in Brecknock Township, Berks County.

Initial work will start with the installation of a temporary barrier at the northbound weigh station entrance from 8:00 PM on April 6 to 6:00 AM on April 7. The barrier will result in a long-term shoulder closure to facilitate the construction of the new weigh station access road. Additional milling on the Route 222 mainline will commence on Friday, April 18, with overnight work scheduled from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Sunday through Friday nights.

Drivers can expect periodic lane restrictions during nighttime milling and paving operations, as well as weekend shoulder closures to perform bridge work. Temporary restrictions will also be implemented at the PennDOT maintenance stockpile near the Ephrata Exit.

The $7.7 million project, managed by New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., Inc., will include bituminous resurfacing, full-width milling, base repair, guide rail updates, concrete patching, and the construction of the weigh station access road. Plans also include traffic line painting and updated signage.

PennDOT emphasizes that all scheduled activities are weather dependent, and further updates will be provided ahead of any major traffic modifications.
