UPPER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a partial reopening of the northbound U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike), marking a significant step towards restoring full traffic flow on the crucial artery. The affected stretch, between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, was closed earlier due to a sinkhole discovered on Thursday morning, December 14.

The left lane on the northbound U.S. 202 will remain closed for pavement repairs caused by the sinkhole. Meanwhile, the southbound section of U.S. 202 between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard remains closed due to additional sinkhole repair work. This section had been closed since Friday evening, December 15, following the discovery of a new sinkhole underneath the southbound travel lanes.

During the ongoing closure, PennDOT has arranged for southbound motorists to be redirected via Saulin Boulevard and Henderson Road. Local access will be maintained for all residents and businesses affected by the closure.

The reopening of one northbound lane comes as a relief to local commuters and businesses, especially during the holiday season when traffic volumes typically increase. However, the entire section of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) will remain closed until PennDOT engineers can fully assess the extent of the new damage and develop a comprehensive plan for complete and safe reopening of the highway.

PennDOT crews have been working around the clock to address the issue and minimize disruption. Despite these challenges, the department remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and the speedy resolution of this incident. Further updates on the progress of the repair work will be provided as more information becomes available.
