Overnight Utility Work to Improve Safety at Five-Points Intersection: Expect Delays

Road work - traffic alert

MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that overnight utility work will continue next week on three state highways. This work is part of a $14.2 million project to improve travel and safety at the Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) Intersection, often known as the Five-Points Intersection, in Montgomery Township, Montgomery County.

From Monday, March 11 through Friday, March 15, between 7:00 PM and 5:00 AM the following morning, motorists should anticipate lane closures on Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Cowpath Road/Horsham Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road). Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these work areas as traffic backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

This intersection improvement project includes the installation of additional lanes at the intersection approaches on both directions of Route 463 and on southbound Route 309. The widening of the roadway will allow for 18 travel lanes to approach the intersection, an increase from the existing 15, aiming to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes.

Other enhancements include upgrading and retiming signalization; installing sidewalks, ADA curb ramps, and guiderail; upgrading stormwater drainage, signage, and pavement markings; adjusting driveway access; and reducing erosion sediment.

Notably, the intersection improvements on Route 463 and Route 309 will enhance traffic flow for westbound Route 463 motorists turning right onto northbound Business U.S. 202.

Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Chester County, is the general contractor on this project, which is financed entirely with federal funds.

While the temporary inconvenience and delays may be frustrating for regular commuters and residents, the significance of these works cannot be overstated. Improved traffic flow and enhanced safety measures at the Five-Points Intersection are expected to result in fewer accidents and smoother commutes for all. Commuters are urged to exercise patience and caution during these works, keeping in mind the ultimate goal of safer, more efficient travel in Montgomery County.
