SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA— Next week, motorists navigating Interstate 476 should prepare for a series of overnight lane closures, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) embarks on a comprehensive $63.7 million resurfacing and repair project. Spanning from West Conshohocken Borough in Montgomery County to Ridley Township in Delaware County, this ambitious endeavor aims to rejuvenate nearly 17 miles of one of the region’s critical arteries.
From Monday, May 13, through Friday, May 17, drivers will face lane closures along northbound sections between the Route 3 (Upper Darby/Broomall) and I-76 (Philadelphia/Valley Forge) interchanges, as well as southbound stretches between the U.S. 1 and I-95 interchanges, all occurring from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Additionally, daytime bridge repairs will reduce Bryn Mawr Avenue and Clyde Road to a single lane at the Ithan Avenue Intersection in Radnor Township, promising further disruptions.
This extensive project not only focuses on milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders but also addresses the repair of 49 structures and the improvement of 21 stormwater management basins. Efforts to stabilize rock slopes, mend sound walls, replace inlets, and refresh pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderails are all part of PennDOT’s strategy to enhance ride quality and safety.
H&K Group, Inc., headquartered in Skippack, PA, has taken the helm as the general contractor for this federally funded project, which is poised to conclude in late 2025. Commuters are advised to allocate extra travel time when passing through the affected areas, as backups and delays are anticipated. The project underscores a significant investment in the longevity and safety of I-476, promising a smoother and more secure experience for future travelers.
