PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated a major paving operation on the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia, part of a $36.8 million endeavor aimed at resurfacing nearly five miles of Interstate 76, its ramps, and 23 bridges within the city. This extensive project, set to enhance one of Philadelphia’s key arteries, will inevitably lead to traffic complications in the short term.
Motorists are cautioned to prepare for a lane closure on both eastbound and westbound I-76 between the Belmont Avenue and Montgomery Drive interchanges, starting Sunday night, May 5, from 9:00 PM until 5:00 AM the next morning. The disruption will continue throughout the week, with a single lane closure affecting the eastbound side of the expressway during the same overnight hours from Monday, May 6, through Friday, May 10.
Travelers navigating these sections of the expressway during the specified times should expect backups and delays, and are advised to allow for additional travel time. The impact of these operations, while focused on long-term roadway improvement, underscores the immediate need for planning and patience among daily commuters and occasional users alike. All work schedules are contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
The scope of the project is comprehensive, including milling and overlaying pavement, repairing and replacing concrete bases, shoulders, barriers, and constructing minor grade adjustments. Additionally, damaged signs will be replaced, new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips will be installed, and necessary bridge repairs will be performed, all aimed at ensuring a safer, smoother travel experience for motorists.
H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, serves as the general contractor for this federally funded project. Physical construction is expected to conclude in late 2024.
