PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a critical phase in the ongoing rehabilitation of the Wayne Junction Viaduct, a project that aims to enhance the structural integrity and safety of the vital artery over the SEPTA tracks and Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia. As part of a $100.6 million initiative, motorists traversing U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) will experience overnight lane closures this week.
Today, March 28, for southbound travelers of U.S. 1 between 9th Street and Broad Street, from 6:00 PM until 4:30 AM the following morning, one lane will be closed, with traffic pacing occurring during the late-night hours as well.
These measures are necessary to allow PennDOT’s contractors to carry out post-construction punch list activities on the Broad Street overpass. This includes final checks and minor adjustments to ensure the overpass meets safety and quality standards, marking one of the last stages in the extensive project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct.
Motorists planning to use U.S. 1 during these times are advised to anticipate delays and consider alternative routes if possible. The lane closures and traffic pacing are critical steps toward completing the rehabilitation project, aimed at ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of this key infrastructure component in Philadelphia’s transportation network.
