Ongoing Roadway and Bridge Construction on U.S. 1 and U.S. 13 in Philadelphia to Cause Delays

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has confirmed that road and bridge construction will persist next week under a $7.8 million project. The aim is to replace the overhead ramp and structure from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia.

From Monday, December 11 to Friday, December 15, a partial left lane closure will take place on the northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) ramp at Old York Road. The closure, in effect from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily, is for roadway, curb, and drainage improvement work. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time or consider alternate routes due to expected backups and delays. All scheduled activities depend on the weather.

PennDOT reminds drivers that the southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) ramp remains closed around the clock through January 2024. The ramp was initially closed for demolition and replacement on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

During the ramp closure, southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) motorists are directed to follow the posted detour using Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to access U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).

The project includes the removal of the existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard). It will be replaced with a single-span, precast concrete bridge, providing additional vertical clearance. Other improvements include constructing retaining wall extensions on the approaches of the new bridge, full depth paving, and the construction of a new sidewalk, ADA curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderail, and pavement markings.
