HARLEYSVILLE, PA — Olive & Melon Design, a woman-owned interior design firm in Harleysville, PA, is redefining what it means to create personalized spaces. Known for its bespoke design services, the firm specializes in crafting unique interiors and custom furniture, while also embracing a mission to give back to the community.
Founded by Mel McDaniel, the “Melon” of Olive & Melon, the firm offers a comprehensive range of services, from custom framing to designing and building furniture to specification. “We love the challenge of creating spaces for our clients that are exceptionally functional and equally beautiful,” said McDaniel. Her partner, Olivia Gorman, brings expertise in industrial design and woodworking, forming a dynamic team that addresses design challenges with creativity and precision. “Together we create unique, functional spaces, one detail at a time,” Gorman added.
McDaniel’s journey into design was unconventional but rich with experience. A native of Ontario, she explored various passions worldwide before finding her niche in interior design. Her first project was a three-story Tudor, which set the tone for her client-focused, adaptable style. “I don’t believe I’m hired for a certain ‘look,’ but for my ability to listen and create the best outcome for the people living in a house,” McDaniel explained.
Gorman, who joined McDaniel in 2022, complements her partner’s vision with a background in custom furniture making. Her design aesthetic is eco-friendly and playful, emphasizing sustainable, non-toxic materials. Gorman’s talent for crafting bespoke furniture solutions has earned her praise from clients, as she often modifies designs to fit specific needs and spaces.
Beyond their design work, Olive & Melon Design is deeply committed to social impact. In 2019, McDaniel launched Marvin’s Home, a non-profit named after her rescue dog. The initiative provides gently used furniture to young adults transitioning out of homelessness or foster care. “Marvin’s Home is more than just a furniture provider; our goal is to create spaces that evoke a sense of home,” McDaniel shared.
In 2022, the firm expanded its community efforts by opening Home on Main, an upcycled home store funding Marvin’s Home. To date, the organization has furnished 75 homes for young adults, aligning with McDaniel’s belief in using design to improve lives. “When beauty, design, and purpose connect in a home, the outcomes are laden with immense potential,” she said.
As Olive & Melon Design continues to grow, McDaniel and Gorman remain committed to their mission of creating beautiful, functional spaces while supporting their community. “We have big dreams, and we both realize this is just the beginning,” McDaniel concluded.
