PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that Henry Avenue will undergo nighttime closures for resurfacing and safety improvements. This project aims to enhance travel and safety along the Henry Avenue corridor in the East Falls and Wissahickon neighborhoods.

Beginning Thursday, August 22, and running through Thursday, August 29, Henry Avenue will be closed weeknights between Midvale Avenue and Roberts Avenue from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM. During these closures, motorists are advised to use Midvale Avenue, Fox Street, and Roberts Avenue as detour routes. Local access will be maintained. Drivers should anticipate backups and delays and are advised to allow extra travel time. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT’s contractor will carry out resurfacing and a comprehensive upgrade of traffic signals along this 1.6-mile section of Henry Avenue. The project will also include redesigning the highway infrastructure, enhancing pedestrian and bicyclist mobility, and addressing speeding issues.

New and upgraded traffic signals will be installed at the intersections of Abbotsford Avenue, the Medical College driveway, Queen Lane, Midvale Avenue, Coulter Street, Schoolhouse Lane, and the Jefferson University driveway.

Additional improvements involve new signage and roadway design features through pavement markings, milling and resurfacing, median widening, and guiderail replacements. To bolster traffic safety, a southbound left turn lane will be added at the Midvale Avenue intersection, and the traffic island at Warden Drive will be enlarged. Vegetative raised center medians will be introduced south of Abbotsford Avenue, near the Medical College driveway, and north of Schoolhouse Lane. Concrete raised center medians will be added at the Medical College driveway, Queen Lane, and Coulter Street.

Other safety enhancements will include installing bump-outs, sidewalks, and ADA ramps at numerous intersections, including Roberts Avenue, Abbotsford Avenue, the Medical College driveway, Indian Queen Lane, Bowman Street, Ainslie Street, Tilden Street, Queen Lane, Penn Street, Midvale Avenue, Coulter Street, Warden Drive, Schoolhouse Lane, and the Jefferson University driveway.
