Nighttime Lighting Installation on Roosevelt Expressway May Impact Commutes, PennDOT Warns

Traffic Advisory

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that lighting installation work will be carried out next week on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway), as part of a $100.6 million rehabilitation project for the Wayne Junction Viaduct. The project, which spans over the SEPTA tracks and Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia, could temporarily disrupt traffic flow and cause potential delays for commuters.

According to PennDOT, on Tuesday, January 23, from 7:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following morning, a right lane closure will be implemented on the northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between Henry Avenue and Wissahickon Avenue. Simultaneously, from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following morning, a right lane closure will also be in place on the southbound U.S. 1 between Wissahickon Avenue and Henry Avenue.

These closures are necessary to facilitate the installation of underside lighting on the Fox Street bridge, a key component of PennDOT’s near-completed Wayne Junction Viaduct rehabilitation project.

While the work is being carried out to enhance the safety and visibility of the viaduct, it could lead to temporary inconveniences for drivers using this route. Backups and delays may occur, particularly during the late evening and early morning hours when the work is scheduled to take place. As such, motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the affected area.

This substantial project aims to improve the structural integrity and safety of the Wayne Junction Viaduct, a crucial artery for Philadelphia’s commuting public. The installation of the new lighting system is a significant step towards achieving this goal, promising enhanced visibility and safety for all road users.
