Nighttime Lane Closures on I-95 Could Snarl Traffic in Northeast Philadelphia

Lane closures

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Motorists in Northeast Philadelphia should brace for potential traffic snarls as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) embarks on crucial paving operations on Interstate 95. This work is part of the ongoing comprehensive reconstruction project at the Cottman Avenue Interchange, a critical juncture aiming to enhance roadway safety and efficiency.

Starting tonight, Tuesday, March 26, travelers will encounter a series of lane closures designed to facilitate the next phase of construction. Beginning at 7:00 PM, a left lane closure will be implemented on northbound I-95 between the Betsy Ross Bridge and Academy Road interchanges. The situation will escalate at 11:00 PM with a double lane closure extending until 5:00 AM the following morning. This will allow crews to safely place the concrete deck on the inner section of the new northbound bridge, marking a significant milestone in the project’s progression.

Simultaneously, southbound I-95 will also see a left lane closure in the stretch between the Academy Road and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM. This measure is necessary to ensure construction vehicles can access the work zone without compromising the safety of the traveling public.

This project phase follows the completion of the outer sections of the new bridge in November 2023, which allowed traffic to shift onto these parts while construction continues on the center section, anticipated to last into mid-2024.

PennDOT advises drivers planning to travel through this area during the affected hours to allocate extra time for their journeys. Backups and delays are expected as the lane closures will reduce the roadway’s capacity, potentially leading to congestion. As always, the scheduling of these activities is contingent on favorable weather conditions.
