Nighttime Guiderail Installation on U.S. 1 Roosevelt Expressway’s Wayne Junction Viaduct Begins Next Week

Travel Restrictions

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced plans for nighttime guiderail installation next week on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway). This effort is part of a larger $96.6 million project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct, a structure that extends over the SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia.

From Monday, December 4, through Friday, December 8, motorists can expect periodic right lane closures from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM on the northbound side of U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) between Interstate 76 and 9th Street. Similarly, southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) will see right lane closures from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, between 9th Street and I-76 during the same period.

These necessary steps towards the rehabilitation of the Viaduct are expected to cause delays and backups. Motorists are therefore advised to allow extra time when traveling through these work areas. As with all construction activities, these scheduled operations are weather dependent, and schedules may be subject to change.

The extensive rehabilitation project aims to revitalize the half-mile-long Wayne Junction Viaduct, a critical component of U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway). The ongoing project underscores PennDOT’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure and safety in the region.

With the rehabilitation of the Wayne Junction Viaduct, a significant chapter of Philadelphia’s transportation history is being preserved, while ensuring the structure continues to serve as a vital link for motorists.
