Nighttime Delays Expected as $63.7 Million I-476 Improvement Project Kicks Off Next Week

Traffic Alert

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Southeastern Pennsylvania motorists, take note. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that a major improvement project on Interstate 476 is set to commence next week, signaling the start of nighttime repair operations that may result in traffic delays.

The $63.7 million project aims to resurface, repair, and enhance nearly 17 miles of the interstate, including the associated on-and-off ramps and bridges stretching from I-76 in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.

Starting Monday, February 19, through Friday, February 23, drivers should anticipate lane closures between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM on various sections of northbound and southbound I-476, specifically between the I-76 (Philadelphia/Valley Forge) and I-95 (Philadelphia/Chester) interchanges. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time due to potential backups and delays in the work zones.

The comprehensive project, contracted to H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, and funded entirely with federal dollars, includes an array of improvements. PennDOT will mill and overlay I-476’s travel lanes and shoulders in both directions, repair 49 structures, and enhance 21 stormwater management basins to address existing rock slope stabilization issues. Additional upgrades will include sound wall repairs, inlet replacements at select locations, and new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail installations.

The primary objective of this work, projected to conclude in late 2025, is to prolong the lifespan of the interstate, enhance ride quality and safety, and upgrade deteriorated elements along the roadside. These elements encompass stormwater basins, drainage inlets, slope stabilization, guiderails, and signs.
