PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that core borings are set to take place next week, during nighttime hours, on southbound Interstate 95. The operations will specifically target the Fishtown and Northern Liberties neighborhoods in Philadelphia.
From Monday, December 18, through Friday, December 22, a lane closure will be in effect on southbound I-95 between the Girard Avenue (Exit 23) and I-676 (Exit 22) interchanges. The closure is scheduled from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning.
Drivers are urged to allow extra time when traveling through this area, as significant backups and delays are expected due to the ongoing operations.
These core boring operations form part of the upcoming PennDOT I-95/GR6 project. This project aims to reconstruct the southbound section of I-95 between Frankford Avenue and the I-676/Vine Street Expressway.
Core borings are an essential part of road construction, allowing engineers to examine the soil beneath a highway. The data collected from these operations can help determine the viability of the ground for supporting the infrastructure above it.
