PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has unveiled plans for a significant nighttime construction project on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia. This work is part of a broader $36.8 million effort to refurbish nearly five miles of the interstate, including the resurfacing of roads, the repair of 23 bridges, and the overhaul of associated ramps.
From Monday, April 15, through Friday, April 19, motorists can expect a lane closure on the expressway between the Belmont Avenue and Montgomery Drive interchanges from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning. This scheduling aims to minimize disruption during peak travel hours, but drivers are nonetheless advised to anticipate delays and budget additional travel time when navigating this corridor.
The extensive project encompasses a range of improvements designed to enhance safety and driving conditions on one of Philadelphia’s busiest thoroughfares. Among the slated tasks are the milling and overlaying of I-76 pavement from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway), comprehensive repairs and replacements of concrete bases, shoulders, barriers, and bridge structures, as well as upgrades to road signage, markings, and rumble strips. Additionally, PennDOT plans to make minor grade adjustments at select inlet locations to improve drainage.
H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, has been contracted as the general contractor for this ambitious project, which is fully funded by federal dollars. The completion of physical construction is targeted for late 2024, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing its transportation infrastructure.
Given the scope and scale of the work involved, this project represents a critical investment in the longevity and reliability of the Schuylkill Expressway. As such, PennDOT urges the public to stay informed about construction schedules and to exercise patience and caution when traveling through affected areas. By planning ahead and adhering to recommended detours and timing adjustments, motorists can help ensure their safety and that of the construction crews, facilitating a smoother completion of these vital improvements.
