SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — Motorists navigating Interstate 476 through Delaware and Montgomery counties should brace for notable disruptions this week, as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) embarks on extensive nighttime construction efforts. The work, part of two separate projects aimed at enhancing travel safety and infrastructure resilience, will inevitably result in significant traffic slowdowns.

From Monday, April 8, through Friday, April 12, lane closures will be implemented from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM across various segments of I-476, stretching between the interchanges for I-95 (Philadelphia/Chester) and I-76 (Philadelphia/Valley Forge). These closures are essential for bridge, inlet, and pavement repairs and are expected to significantly impact both northbound and southbound traffic flows.

Adding to the week’s traffic challenges, on Wednesday, April 17, drivers should anticipate 15-minute stoppages on the northbound I-476 ramp to westbound MacDade Boulevard. This disruption, scheduled from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, is necessary for the removal and installation of sign structures, a critical component of ongoing safety improvements.

Given the expected delays, PennDOT advises travelers to allocate extra time for their journeys through these areas. While the inconvenience may be temporary, the work is weather-dependent, and schedules may adjust accordingly.

The nighttime operations are integral to a broader initiative to revamp I-476, with a $63.7 million project underway to resurface, repair, and enhance nearly 17 miles of the interstate. Additionally, a $16.2 million project focuses on improving travel conditions and safety measures on MacDade Boulevard and its interchange with northbound I-476.
