EAST HEMPFIELD TWP, PA — Motorists navigating through Lancaster County next week, particularly those using Route 30 and Centerville Road in East Hempfield Township, should brace themselves for a series of rolling stops and lane closures. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has detailed plans for setting beams on the new Centerville Road bridge over Route 30, a critical phase in the ongoing Centerville Road Interchange Improvement project.
The operation kicks off on Tuesday, April 2, with lane closures on eastbound Route 30 starting at 9:00 PM to facilitate the removal of overhead deck formwork. Initially focusing on the right lane before shifting to the left, this preliminary work is slated for completion by the early hours of Wednesday, April 3.
The heart of the project unfolds on Wednesday night when both Centerville Road and the westbound Route 30 off-ramp see closures beginning at 7:00 PM, followed by a closure of the left lane on eastbound Route 30 at 8:00 PM. With these preparations in place, the setting of beams on the bridge’s eastbound side commences, employing rolling stops on Route 30 between 8:30 PM and 2:00 AM to ensure worker safety and project efficiency.
A similar pattern emerges on Thursday, April 4, and Friday, April 5, with lane closures on westbound Route 30 paving the way for beam setting on the bridge’s westbound side. These activities, too, will necessitate rolling stops, scheduled to occur in the late evening hours until the early morning.
Further nighttime work is anticipated the following week, with lane closures extending in both directions on Route 30 to allow for the installation of deck pans and overhang formwork. These closures, running nightly from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM, will vary based on the contractor’s specific needs at different stages of the bridge construction.
Drivers are being urged to remain vigilant, proceed with caution, and anticipate slow-moving traffic amidst these disruptions. The extensive Centerville Road Interchange Improvement project encompasses not just bridge work but also Superpave overlay, roadway widening, guiderail and drainage improvements, pavement markings, ADA enhancements, traffic signal upgrades, and more. Spanning from Cornerstone Drive to Marietta Avenue (Route 23), and extending on Marietta Avenue from Centerville Road to Stony Battery Road, the project’s scope reflects its ambition to significantly enhance local infrastructure.
With JD Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, serving as the prime contractor, this $36.3 million initiative is on track for completion by July 22, 2025. As PennDOT advances with these critical improvements, patience and cooperation from the driving public will be essential for navigating the temporary inconveniences.
