Nighttime Bridge Repairs on I-95 to Cause Traffic Delays in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced upcoming nighttime bridge repairs on Interstate 95, part of a $37.4 million project aimed at maintaining the functionality, safety, and mobility of 27 bridges in the city. This critical work is set to begin next week.

From Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19, there will be single lane closures starting at 9:00 PM, followed by double lane closures from midnight until 5:00 AM on southbound I-95 between Ashburner Street and Bleigh Avenue for diamond grinding.

Additionally, from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19, a lane closure will occur on the ramp from southbound I-95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchanges for bridge repair, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning.

On Monday and Tuesday, July 15 and 16, northbound I-95 between McKean Street and Christian Street will experience single lane closures at 9:00 PM and double lane closures from midnight to 5:00 AM for bridge repair. Southbound I-95 between Tasker Street and Snyder Street will face similar closures during the same time periods.

Furthermore, on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 16 and 17, northbound I-95 between Bleigh Avenue and Ashburner Street will have single lane closures at 9:00 PM and double lane closures from midnight to 5:00 AM for materials testing.

Drivers should anticipate significant backups and delays and are advised to allow extra travel time. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this contract, PennDOT’s contractor will address deteriorated bridge decks and superstructure components, including repairing structural steel, weld cracks, prestressed concrete beams, reinforced concrete bridge decks, bridge railing, guiderail, and steel sign supports. The project also involves replacing expansion joints, sealing deck joints, and strip seal glands on the bridge decks.

Substructure work will include repairing or reconstructing bearing pedestals, steel fixed bearings, and deteriorated portions of the concrete substructure. The contractor will also clean bridge seats, reset expansion bearings, and remove debris from under the bridges.

In addition to bridge repairs, 11 overhead steel sign structures will be cleaned and repainted. Existing roadway lighting will be upgraded to LED luminaires to improve visibility and energy efficiency.

IEW Construction Group, Inc., based in Hamilton, N.J., is the general contractor for this federally funded project. Physical construction is expected to be completed by late 2027.
