PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced ongoing bridge repairs and construction activities on Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia. These operations are expected to cause significant traffic backups and delays.
Starting Monday, July 22, through Thursday, July 25, a right lane closure will be in place on northbound I-95 between the Allegheny Avenue and Betsy Ross Bridge interchanges. This includes the northbound ramp to the bridge, where core borings will be conducted from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
From Monday, July 22, to Friday, July 26, southbound I-95 will experience a single lane closure starting at 9:00 PM, followed by a double lane closure from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM between Ashburner Street and Bleigh Avenue. The work includes diamond grinding and line striping.
Additionally, the ramp from southbound I-95 at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchanges will have a lane closure for bridge repair from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, Monday through Friday.
On Wednesday, July 24, through Friday, July 26, northbound I-95 will see similar disruptions. A single lane closure will start at 9:00 PM, followed by a double lane closure from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM between Ashburner Street and Bleigh Avenue for diamond grinding and line striping.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time while traveling through these areas. Significant backups and delays are expected. All activities are weather-dependent.
The core borings are part of the design phase for PennDOT’s upcoming I-95/AF3 project. This project will reconstruct northbound I-95 and its structures between Ann Street and Wheatsheaf Lane, with construction tentatively scheduled for 2025.
The bridge repair, diamond grinding, and line striping are components of PennDOT’s $37.4 million project aimed at performing high-priority repairs on 27 I-95 bridges in the city. These repairs are crucial for maintaining the functionality, safety, and mobility of the structures along this vital corridor.
Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time to navigate through the construction zones.
