Nightly Construction on I-76 in Philadelphia Slated for Upcoming Week

Travel Restrictions

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a $36.8 million project to repair and resurface nearly five miles of Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), including the associated ramps and 23 bridges from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway) in Philadelphia. The project, which is fully funded by federal dollars, is expected to be completed in late 2024.

Starting Monday, November 27, through Friday, December 1, lane closures will be in effect from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM the following morning. These closures will affect various sections of eastbound and westbound I-76 between the U.S. 1 South (Exit 339) and Spring Garden/Haverford Avenue (Exit 343) interchanges. The nighttime work is part of a plan to minimize traffic disruptions and includes saw cutting and paint realignment activities.

Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and allow extra time when traveling through the work areas. PennDOT has warned that backups may occur, and all scheduled activities are subject to weather conditions.

Under this contract, PennDOT will execute an extensive range of repairs. This includes milling and overlaying I-76 pavement in both directions, performing concrete base, shoulder and barrier repair and replacement as needed, constructing minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations, replacing damaged signs, installing new pavement markings, delineators and rumble strips, and carrying out bridge repairs.

H&K Group, Inc., a Skippack-based company, has been appointed as the general contractor for this significant infrastructure project.
