PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that various night-time construction activities, including milling, paving, and bridge repair, will proceed next week on Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in Philadelphia. This undertaking is part of a $36.8 million project aimed at resurfacing and repairing nearly five miles of the interstate, associated ramps, and over 20 bridges.
From Sunday, August 18, through Friday, August 23, lane closures will be in effect on eastbound and westbound I-76 between the Montgomery Drive and I-676 (Vine Street Expressway) interchanges from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM. On Monday, August 19, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 (City Avenue) to eastbound I-76 will be closed and detoured for guiderail installation and paving. Motorists will be directed to use westbound I-76, exit at Belmont Avenue, and use the ramp to access eastbound I-76.
Additionally, from Monday, August 19, through Wednesday, August 21, the ramp from Girard Avenue to westbound I-76 will be closed and detoured from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM for guiderail installation, milling, and paving. Drivers will be rerouted to turn right onto Belmont Avenue and then onto Montgomery Drive to access westbound I-76.
Motorists should anticipate backups and delays and are advised to allow extra travel time. All scheduled activities depend on weather conditions.
Under this contract, PennDOT’s contractor will mill and overlay pavement from U.S. 1 to I-676, perform concrete base, shoulder, and barrier repairs as needed, make minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations, replace damaged signs, install new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips, and conduct bridge repairs.
