PHILADELPHIA, PA — Motorists are bracing themselves for a week of night-time disruptions as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced plans to continue with regional bridge repairs along a key artery of the city’s transport network.
On Thursday, January 31, lane closures will be implemented on southbound Interstate 95 from 7.30 PM until 5:00 AM the following morning. The affected stretch runs between the Walt Whitman Bridge and the Broad Street (Route 611) Interchange.
Drivers are being warned to anticipate traffic backups and significant delays when navigating through the work zone. As such, PennDOT is advising motorists to factor in extra time for their journeys. However, all scheduled activities hinge on weather conditions, leaving room for potential changes or postponements.
The project aims to carry out essential repairs on the structures, including the replacement of rocker bearings, frozen sliding plate bearings, and deck expansion joints. Other works include cleaning and painting steel beams, repairing substructure concrete, and reconstructing bearing pedestals.
In addition to these structural improvements, the project also includes the replacement of high mast light poles along the I-95 corridor in Philadelphia and Delaware counties. This move is expected to enhance visibility and safety for motorists traveling at night.
The responsibility for executing this crucial project lies with Driscoll Construction Company, Inc., a Philadelphia-based firm. Notably, the entire project is financed with federal funds.
