PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia motorists, prepare for nighttime disruptions on one of the city’s main arteries. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of repairs set to take place on the eastbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), part of a comprehensive $36.8 million project aimed at revitalizing nearly five miles of the interstate, its ramps, and 23 bridges within the Philadelphia area.
From Monday, April 8, through Friday, April 12, drivers will encounter lane closures between the hours of 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM the following morning. The affected stretch runs from the Belmont Avenue interchange to the Montgomery Drive interchange, setting the stage for potential backups and delays as travelers navigate the reduced roadway capacity.
This extensive project is designed not only to resurface the pavement from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway) but also to undertake a host of other essential improvements. These include concrete repair and replacement, inlet adjustments, sign replacements, and bridge repairs—all crucial for ensuring the long-term safety and functionality of this vital expressway.
Given the project’s scale and its execution during peak travel hours, PennDOT advises motorists to plan for additional travel time when passing through the work zones. Weather conditions may influence the schedule of these activities, adding another layer of unpredictability to the already complex task of navigating one of Philadelphia’s busiest routes.
The H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, serves as the general contractor for this federally funded initiative, with completion slated for late 2024. As the city embarks on this significant infrastructure upgrade, patience and caution from the driving public will be paramount in minimizing disruptions and ensuring the safety of both workers and commuters alike.
