PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia drivers, prepare for a week of nighttime disruptions on southbound Interstate 95. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has embarked on a significant $37.4 million endeavor aimed at executing high-priority repairs on 27 bridges across the city to ensure their continued functionality and safety. This essential maintenance forms part of a broader effort to uphold the integrity of this vital corridor.
Starting Monday, May 13, through Friday, May 17, southbound lanes near the Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue Interchange will experience phased closures. Initially, a single lane will close at 9:00 PM, escalating to a double lane closure from midnight until 5:00 AM. These measures are necessary for deck joint repair, a critical component of bridge maintenance that cannot be postponed.
Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and consider adjusting their travel schedules accordingly. PennDOT stresses that these activities are contingent on favorable weather conditions, adding an element of unpredictability to the already challenging task of infrastructure upkeep.
The scope of work under this contract is comprehensive. Beyond deck repairs, it encompasses refurbishing superstructure components and sections of the substructures. From welding cracks to replacing expansion joints and upgrading roadway lighting to LED luminaires, each task is geared towards prolonging the lifespan of these structures and enhancing road safety.
This project also includes cleaning and repainting overhead steel sign structures, a seemingly aesthetic endeavor that plays a crucial role in ensuring the visibility and durability of traffic signage.
