PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a comprehensive bridge deck repair initiative set to unfold next week on southbound Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia. This operation is part of a larger $37.4 million project aimed at executing high-priority repairs across 27 I-95 bridges within the city, essential for ensuring continued functionality, safety, and mobility along this vital corridor.

From Monday, May 6, through Thursday, May 9, motorists should prepare for a single lane closure commencing at 9:00 PM, which will escalate to a double lane closure from midnight until 5:00 AM near the Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue Interchange, to facilitate deck joint repair works.

Further, on Friday, May 10, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, drivers can anticipate periodic slowdowns affecting multiple I-95 ramps, including the Columbus Boulevard ramp to I-95 South, the I-95 North/South Ramp to I-76 East, among others. These slowdowns are necessary for conducting a deck joint survey, marking a critical phase in the overarching repair strategy.

PennDOT urges travelers to account for additional travel time due to expected backups and delays stemming from these nighttime repair activities, all of which are contingent upon favorable weather conditions.

The scope of this ambitious project encompasses extensive repairs not only to the bridges’ decks but also to their superstructure and substructure components as required. Efforts include mending fabricated structural steel, weld cracks, prestressed concrete beams, and more. Furthermore, the project will see the cleaning and repainting of 11 overhead steel sign structures and an upgrade of existing roadway lighting to LED luminaires, enhancing visibility and safety.
