PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that night construction will take place next week on Interstate 76, also known as the Schuylkill Expressway, in Philadelphia. This work is part of a $36.8 million project aimed at resurfacing and repairing nearly five miles of the interstate, including on-and-off ramps and over 20 bridges.
From Monday, July 22, through Friday, July 26, lane closures will be in effect between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM on both eastbound and westbound I-76 between U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) and Girard Avenue/Philadelphia Zoo. These closures are for milling, paving, and guiderail installation. Motorists should expect significant delays and backups.
Additionally, the ramp from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) to westbound I-76 will be closed and detoured during the same hours for bridge deck and concrete repairs. Drivers will need to use eastbound I-76 and exit at Montgomery Drive to access westbound I-76.
On Monday, July 22, and Wednesday, July 24, the ramp from Montgomery Drive to eastbound I-76 will be closed for paving. Motorists will be directed to use Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Sweet Briar Drive, Lansdowne Drive, and Girard Avenue to access eastbound I-76.
On Tuesday, July 23, and Friday, July 26, the ramp from westbound I-76 to Montgomery Drive will be closed and detoured for paving. Drivers will be directed to continue west on I-76, exit at Belmont Avenue, and use eastbound I-76 to reach Montgomery Drive.
PennDOT advises drivers to allow extra time when traveling through these areas due to the expected traffic delays. All the scheduled activities are weather dependent and may be adjusted accordingly.
The project includes milling and overlaying the pavement, repairing and replacing concrete base, shoulders, and barriers, making minor grade adjustments at select inlets, replacing damaged signs, installing new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, and performing bridge repairs.
