SCRANTON, PA — Roy Niles, 59, of Nineveh, New York, was sentenced to a hefty 144 months in prison. The sentence was handed down on February 29, 2024, by U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani, following Niles’ conviction for conspiracy to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine.
Niles had previously pleaded guilty, admitting to his involvement in a conspiracy to distribute between 1.5 kilograms and 5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in the Susquehanna County area back in March 2020. United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam provided these details, explaining the circumstances that led to Niles’ arrest.
The charge originated from an incident in March 2020, when Niles arranged to purchase several pounds of crystal methamphetamine from another individual in Susquehanna County. After receiving the drugs, Niles found himself in the crosshairs of the Pennsylvania State Police. However, instead of surrendering, Niles opted for a daring escape, leading the police on a high-speed chase from Pennsylvania all the way into New York.
The chase ended with Niles’ apprehension and subsequent charges for his role in the drug distribution plot. The investigation, which led to these charges, was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Pennsylvania State Police, with assistance from the New York State Police.
Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara prosecuted the case, resulting in this significant sentence. This case highlights the severity of penalties associated with drug distribution and evading law enforcement, underscoring the commitment of local and federal agencies in their fight against drug-related crimes.
