CHESTER, PA – The New Pennsylvania Project, a non-partisan organization dedicated to voter registration, civic education, and mobilization, has officially relocated its headquarters to the city of Chester. The new office, situated at 2619 9th Street, opened its doors on July 29th and aims to offer Pennsylvanians opportunities to register to vote, check their registration status, and learn more about the democratic process.
“This move is three years in the making. We couldn’t be happier with it,” stated Kadida Kenner, CEO and founder of the New Pennsylvania Project. The organization’s mission is to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate to better reflect the state’s demographically changing population. By emphasizing the importance of voting, the project seeks to reach out to residents and encourage their participation in elections.
Recent data from the 2020 U.S. Census and voter registration records reveal that nearly one-third of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color eligible to vote in Pennsylvania have not yet registered. Kenner pointed out, “This work is always about empowering communities and civically engaging Pennsylvania’s most disenfranchised.” She emphasized the organization’s commitment to “meet people where they are and get them registered to vote by talking about the issues that matter in their lives.”
To celebrate the grand opening, the New Pennsylvania Project is hosting a block party on August 13th from 5:30-8:00 pm. The event will feature free food, sweet treats, and activities for children. Attendees will also have the opportunity to register to vote or check their voter registration status. Additionally, a special screening of the documentary “Suppressed and Sabotaged,” directed by Robert Greenwald of Brave New Films, will take place. This 45-minute film highlights the tactics used to manipulate elections and explores ways to restore democratic integrity.
Empowering Democracy
The relocation of the New Pennsylvania Project’s headquarters to Chester carries significant implications. Chester, a city with a diverse population and a history of voter disenfranchisement, stands to benefit greatly from enhanced access to voter registration services. By situating the headquarters in an underserved community, the organization is strategically positioned to engage with residents who may have previously felt excluded from the political process.
Voter registration and civic engagement are crucial for a functioning democracy. Ensuring that all eligible citizens are registered to vote and informed about their rights and responsibilities is fundamental to fair representation. The New Pennsylvania Project’s efforts to register voters and educate them about the electoral process is expected to increase voter turnout and strengthen democratic participation.
