New Ocean Health Survey Reveals Deep Connection Between Chronic Conditions and Mental Health

New Ocean

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — A recent survey from New Ocean Health highlights the widespread prevalence of chronic conditions and their significant impact on mental health in the United States. The survey indicates that nearly 75% of respondents have been diagnosed with at least one chronic condition, with high cholesterol and hypertension being the most common physical ailments. Anxiety and depression are the leading mental health issues, affecting 56% and 48% of participants, respectively.

There is a growing acknowledgment of the link between chronic conditions and mental health, with 80% of respondents agreeing that these issues are interconnected and severely affect daily life. The data reveals that 40% of those with chronic or mental health conditions experience depression-related challenges, 37% miss important family events, and 23% need to take time off work, underscoring the impact on productivity and quality of life.

According to Michael J. Musci Jr., DO, MBA, Chief Medical Officer of New Ocean, “Chronic conditions increasingly strain Americans, negatively affecting both overall well-being and mental health. There’s a rising need for accessible, personalized health management solutions.”

Digital health tools are emerging as a promising solution, with 66% of respondents willing to use these tools to manage their conditions. However, 30% of participants noted a lack of access to digital solutions, which they would be eager to use if provided by employers. This presents an opportunity for employers to offer digital health benefits, yet a gap persists as nearly a quarter of respondents are unaware if their employer provides such resources.

The survey also highlights the potential for digital engagement, particularly among young adults aged 18-44, who are more likely to use health management tools. About 70% of this demographic would consistently use digital solutions if they included reminders or nudges, indicating a demand for proactive features in digital health tools.

Despite the rise of digital solutions, traditional healthcare remains essential. Sixty-seven percent of respondents still prefer guidance from their primary care physicians. As digital technologies continue to integrate into healthcare, a combined approach using both primary care and digital monitoring is likely to offer a more comprehensive management strategy for chronic conditions.

The survey underscores the urgent need for improved communication and engagement strategies to bridge the gap between the availability of health management tools and their utilization by individuals, particularly in light of the increasing chronic condition rates among younger adults.
