NEWARK, DE — Delaware State Police have named 54-year-old Nadeem Cassiem of Keasbey, New Jersey, as the suspect in a vehicle theft that occurred on Interstate 95 in Newark, Delaware yesterday morning.

On February 7, 2024, at around 7:09 a.m., troopers responded to a collision on I-95 southbound, near State Route 273. Before they arrived, they were informed that one of the drivers involved in the accident had allegedly stolen the car of a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help and then fled the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that a white RAM pickup truck was traveling in the right southbound lane of I-95 when it was rear-ended by a red Toyota Rav4, driven by the suspect. A passerby stopped to check on the drivers, during which time the driver of the Toyota allegedly entered the Good Samaritan’s Mercury Mountaineer and drove off, heading south on I-95.

Through further investigation, troopers identified Cassiem as the driver of the Toyota and the alleged thief of the Mercury. Shortly after the incident, Cassiem and the stolen vehicle were located in Maryland by the Perryville Police Department. Cassiem was taken into custody without incident.

Upon his extradition to Delaware, Cassiem will face charges that include one felony count of motor vehicle theft and multiple traffic violations.

As with all criminal cases, the information is subject to change as more details may emerge. An arrest or a criminal complaint does not equate to guilt. All suspects, including Cassiem, are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Further updates will be provided as additional details become available.
