LANCASTER, PA — A New Holland resident is set to face a series of serious charges in Lancaster County Court, following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor. Richard Sherman, 45, of the 500 block of W. Main Street, waived his preliminary hearing last Friday, stepping closer to a trial that has the local community on edge.
The charges against Sherman are severe and numerous, including rape of a child, incest, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, corruption of minors, unlawful contact with a minor, and indecent exposure. These allegations have sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a deeper look into the mechanisms for protecting vulnerable minors.
The case began to unfold on November 1, 2023, when the New Holland Borough Police Department was alerted through a Childline referral about potential sexual misconduct by Sherman. Following this referral, a forensic interview was conducted at the Chester County Children’s Advocacy Center, where the victim disclosed disturbing details of the encounters through both verbal accounts and journal entries. According to these revelations, Sherman not only engaged in inappropriate sexual contact but also allegedly threatened harm against the victim’s mother should the victim reveal their secret.
In a subsequent police interview on December 14, 2023, Sherman reportedly admitted to multiple instances of sexual acts with the minor, lending a grim weight to the allegations against him. The legal process is now moving forward, with Sherman scheduled for arraignment on April 12, 2024, at 9 a.m.
Detective Joshua Bitner of the New Holland Borough Police filed the charges against Sherman, with Assistant District Attorney Steve Sess leading the prosecution. This case has prompted discussions within the community about the safety of children and the importance of vigilance against such alleged abuses.
As the legal proceedings continue, it is crucial to remember that an allegation does not equate to guilt. Sherman, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
