SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the continuation of significant construction activities on Interstate 476 and I-76, also known as the Schuylkill Expressway, as part of a comprehensive $63.7 million project. This extensive initiative aims to resurface, repair, and enhance nearly 17 miles of roadway, including associated ramps and bridges, stretching from I-76 in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.
Commencing this Monday, September 30, and running through Friday, October 4, motorists will encounter lane closures on sections of northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 and I-95 interchanges. These closures will occur nightly from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM to facilitate paving, bridge repair, guiderail installation, and tree trimming. Simultaneously, eastbound and westbound lanes of the I-76 Schuylkill Expressway between Matsonford Road and I-476 will also experience night-time closures for essential bridge repair work.
The scope of this project is extensive. It includes milling and overlaying travel lanes and shoulders on I-476, conducting repairs on 49 structures, upgrading 21 stormwater management basins to tackle rock slope stabilization challenges, and refurbishing sound walls. Additionally, the project will involve the replacement of drainage inlets at specific locations, along with the installation of new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderails.
The overarching objective is to extend the design life of these critical transportation routes, enhance ride quality and safety, and improve the condition of roadside elements. The work is being executed by H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, with full federal funding. The completion of physical construction is anticipated by late 2025.
Motorists are advised to anticipate significant delays and are encouraged to plan additional travel time when navigating the affected areas. As always, these scheduled activities are subject to weather conditions and could be adjusted accordingly to ensure both safety and efficiency.
