MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — Motorists navigating through Montgomery Township are poised for a week of potential delays as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) kicks off an extensive utility work phase. The work is part of a significant $14.2 million project aimed at enhancing travel and safety at the notoriously congested Five-Points Intersection, where Route 309, Route 463, and Business U.S. 202 converge.
Starting Monday, May 13, through Friday, May 17, alternating lane closures and shifts in traffic patterns are expected to disrupt daytime and nighttime flow on these busy highways. The construction schedule outlines closures from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on the early days of the week, shifting to overnight work from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM as the week progresses. The affected stretches include Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Cowpath Road/Horsham Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road), key arteries in the area’s transportation network.
PennDOT advises drivers to anticipate backups and build extra travel time into their schedules. The agency also notes that the timing of construction activities is contingent on favorable weather conditions.
The centerpiece of this project is the reconfiguration of the Five-Points Intersection to improve traffic flow and safety. By widening the roadway to accommodate 18 travel lanes—up from the existing 15—along with installing additional through lanes at crucial approaches, PennDOT aims to alleviate some of the area’s long-standing congestion issues.
Enhancements also include upgrading signal timing, installing new sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and guiderails, as well as improving stormwater drainage and signage. These measures are designed not only to ease current traffic woes but also to cater to the area’s future transportation needs.
For westbound motorists on Route 463 turning right onto northbound Business U.S. 202, the intersection improvements promise smoother transitions, marking a significant step forward in the region’s ongoing efforts to streamline its roadway infrastructure.
