NORRISTOWN, PA — In a significant nod to Women’s History Month, the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners has announced the 2024 launch of the Montgomery County Commission for Women. The new commission is now accepting applications from community members dedicated to improving the status of women and girls in the county.
“The Commission for Women will serve as a platform for evaluating and guiding the county’s efforts to enhance services for women and girls across various demographics,” said Jamila H. Winder, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners. She emphasized the commission’s goals to identify and amplify opportunities for women in business and entrepreneurship, address bias and discrimination, and create safe communities that promote gender equality and eradicate violence against women.
The new commission reflects a broader commitment on the part of the county to address issues affecting women and girls specifically. As Commissioner Neil Makhija stated, “We are dedicated to expanding paid family leave, increasing access to affordable childcare, addressing domestic violence, and disparate maternal health outcomes. Empowering women empowers everyone in our communities.”
Commissioner Tom DiBello echoed these sentiments, underscoring the importance of including diverse perspectives in county-level decision-making processes. He encouraged interested community members to apply, stating, “It’s valuable to have forums such as the Women’s Commission advising on how policies affect women and girls.”
The Commission for Women aims to represent women of all races, ages, ethnic and social backgrounds, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, gender identities, abilities, and social circumstances. Its mandate includes the concerns and needs of women, girls, and those who identify as female.
Open to any community member living or working in Montgomery County, the commission offers a unique opportunity to play a role in enhancing the lives of women in the county. Members will serve an initial two-year term and meet at least bi-monthly. The county plans to appoint up to 21 people to the commission, with applications open until March 28.
The establishment of the Montgomery County Commission for Women marks a significant step toward gender equality in the region. By giving a voice to diverse perspectives and actively seeking to address the unique challenges faced by women and girls, the commission promises to be a powerful force for positive change in the community.
