NORRISTOWN, PA — Montgomery County officials today announced an extension of the Code Blue Cold Weather Emergency in response to persistent freezing temperatures. Originally set to end on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, the emergency declaration is now extended to Sunday, December 8, 2024, at 9 a.m., citing forecasts from the National Weather Service that predict significantly cold conditions over the coming days.

During a Code Blue, temperatures or wind chills are expected to drop at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for two or more consecutive hours. The initiative underscores the county’s commitment to safeguarding the most vulnerable populations, as such extreme weather poses a serious risk of illness, injury, or death for individuals without adequate shelter.

Why the Extension Was Necessary

The continuation of the Code Blue highlights the ongoing threat posed by freezing temperatures coupled with low wind chills, which create dangerous living conditions for the unhoused and other at-risk residents. Prolonged exposure to such weather increases the risk of hypothermia and frostbite, particularly for individuals without access to warm indoor spaces. Public health officials, with support from data supplied by meteorologists, concluded that extending the emergency measure was imperative to sustain vital support services for those in need.

“Our most critical concern is the health and safety of our residents,” the Montgomery County Commissioners emphasized while announcing the extension.

Support Available to Residents

To address the needs of individuals without shelter, the county has activated emergency resources. Residents in need of temporary shelter or assistance during the cold weather emergency can contact the Your Way Home Call Center at 610.278.3522. This hotline offers easy access to temporary housing solutions and additional support for larger-scale housing needs.

Citizens are also urged to remain vigilant, particularly for community members who are elderly or have disabilities, as they may face additional challenges during extreme weather.

Code Blue Cold Weather Tips for Residents

During periods of extreme cold, Montgomery County recommends residents follow these essential safety precautions:

  • Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: Frequently monitor elderly friends, family, and neighbors to ensure they have access to adequately heated housing and proper winter supplies.
  • Be Prepared for Emergencies: Keep cars winterized by ensuring antifreeze levels, tire pressure, and fuel tanks are adequate. Stock vehicles with emergency kits including blankets, a flashlight, and non-perishable food items.
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear multiple layers, including hats, gloves, and scarves, when outdoors for prolonged periods. Limit time outside for both people and pets.
  • Monitor Detectors: Regularly inspect smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure functionality during the increased use of indoor heating appliances.
  • Report Emergencies: If you see someone in urgent need of shelter or other emergency assistance, call or text 9-1-1 immediately.

Staying Safe in the Cold

Montgomery County officials strongly recommend residents remain inside when possible during freezing conditions. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can cause hypothermia, a condition characterized by dangerously low body temperature, which requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms include confusion, shivering, slow breathing or heart rate, and drowsiness.

Additionally, frostbite—a serious cold-weather injury to exposed skin—also presents a significant danger. Early signs include numbness, tingling, or a loss of feeling in extremities. If symptoms occur, residents are advised to seek medical care immediately.

How to Report Issues

Residents experiencing power outages should contact their utility providers to restore services promptly. Emergency lines, such as 9-1-1, should only be used for medical or immediate safety threats. Community members are also reminded to report downed power lines or other hazards to local officials without attempting to resolve the issue themselves.

A Community Effort

The comprehensive measures enacted during Code Blue reflect Montgomery County’s proactive approach to winter preparedness, prioritizing vulnerable groups while emphasizing community responsibility. To learn more about cold weather preparedness, residents can visit the county’s website or dial the Your Way Home Call Center.

With temperatures expected to remain perilously low through early December, officials urge all residents to exercise caution and extend compassion to neighbors who may require help. The county continues to monitor weather conditions and will issue additional guidance if circumstances change.

For immediate shelter assistance or additional resources, contact Your Way Home at 610.278.3522. Montgomery County stated that it remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents as winter weather intensifies.
