GLADWYNE, PA — After enduring closures and construction delays, the Mill Creek Bridge in Lower Merion Township has finally reopened, marking a significant milestone for Montgomery County residents. The bridge, a critical connector between Old Gulph Road and Montgomery Avenue, was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning, followed by a police-led convoy marking the first passage of vehicles since 2021.

Closed due to damage sustained from Hurricane Ida’s floodwaters, the bridge’s foundation underwent extensive reconstruction starting in March 2023. The project, initially delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and further weather-related challenges, was a testament to the dedication of Montgomery County’s engineers, contractors, and township partners.

Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, Jamila H. Winder, emphasized the county’s commitment to the safety of its infrastructure. “Though it is not a large bridge, this project required complex engineering,” Winder stated, acknowledging the efforts that made the reopening possible. The bridge, servicing over 3.6 million vehicles annually, is more than just a route for commuters; it’s essential for emergency first responders and utility providers, ensuring community safety and well-being.

Neil Makhija, another Montgomery County Commissioner, highlighted the local significance of the bridge’s reopening. “This bridge will give residents faster access to local commerce, schools, and all the essential services,” he remarked, outlining the broader impact on daily life in Lower Merion.

The project involved intricate engineering challenges, including deep excavation to rebuild the bridge’s foundations and installing expanded stormwater drainage systems to mitigate future flooding risks. Construction crews worked tirelessly, often extending their hours into nights and weekends to meet the project’s demands.

Thomas DiBello, Montgomery County Commissioner, pointed out the economic implications of the bridge’s reopening. “The completion of this project is key not only to public safety but also to economic prosperity in the area,” DiBello said, praising the collaborative effort between public and private sectors.

The successful completion of the Mill Creek Bridge project serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and persistence.
