MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a significant traffic pattern change on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) as part of a $54.3 million improvement project. Beginning Wednesday, January 8, and continuing through late December 2025, a traffic shift will be implemented in both directions between Colonial Drive and Butchers Lane to accommodate roadway reconstruction.
This long-term project aims to improve and widen approximately 1.8 miles of U.S. 202 from Johnson Highway to Swede Road in Norristown and East Norriton and Whitpain townships. Key improvements include expanding the roadway from two lanes to two northbound lanes, one southbound lane, and a center-turn lane. Additional enhancements will include the installation of five-foot bicycle lanes, new sidewalks, and modernized signals.
Infrastructure upgrades will also feature the reconstruction of a bridge and a box culvert, the construction of sound and retaining walls, and the integration of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to facilitate better traffic flow. Drainage improvements, alongside new signage and pavement markings, are part of the comprehensive design.
This initiative represents a vital phase of PennDOT’s multi-part effort to rebuild, widen, and enhance travel along a crucial 9.1-mile stretch of U.S. 202, extending from Johnson Highway in Norristown to Route 309 in Montgomery Township. Motorists are advised to anticipate potential delays and allow extra time when navigating through the work zone.
