PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the prolonged closure of the Front Street ramp to northbound I-95 in South Philadelphia for critical repairs. The ramp, which has been closed since March 17, will remain inaccessible through December 31 as part of an extensive $40.3 million bridge rehabilitation project targeting 27 interstate bridges in Philadelphia.
The closure, located near the Walt Whitman Bridge, is necessary to ensure uninterrupted traffic on the mainline of I-95 during the construction period. Drivers are being directed to use a detour route via Front Street, Oregon Avenue, and Columbus Boulevard to reach the I-95 North ramp. Motorists should anticipate delays and are urged to plan their journeys accordingly.
This high-priority project includes repairing deteriorated bridge decks, concrete substructures, and superstructure components, along with replacing expansion joints and improving guiderails. To enhance roadway safety and functionality, upgrades will also include repainting 11 overhead steel sign structures and installing LED lighting throughout the affected areas.
IEW Construction Group, Inc., based in Hamilton, New Jersey, is managing the project, which is being funded entirely by federal sources. Although the ramp closure will conclude by the end of 2024, the full scope of construction is projected to extend through late 2027.
