LANCASTER, PA — In a significant development impacting Lancaster County motorists, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a full closure of both eastbound and westbound Route 30, along with the northbound Route 222 bridge spanning Route 30. The closure is part of the ongoing Route 30/Route 222 Interchange Improvement Project and is scheduled for the weekend of May 10-13, with May 17-20 reserved as an alternative date in case of weather delays.
Starting at 9:00 PM on Friday, May 10, and lasting until 5:00 AM on Monday, May 13, this closure will facilitate the demolition of the structure that previously directed southbound Route 222 traffic onto eastbound Route 30. To accommodate this change, a new traffic pattern has been introduced: southbound Route 222 traffic now merges into the northbound lanes just north of the interchange before crossing over to eastbound Route 30 south of the closure. This arrangement will persist until the construction of a new bridge completes.
PennDOT has outlined several detour routes to assist motorists during this period. Eastbound Route 30 traffic will be redirected via Route 501 (Lititz Pike), Route 222 south, Duke Street, and Route 23 east back to Route 30. Similarly, detailed detours have been designed for eastbound Route 30 to northbound Route 222 traffic, as well as for westbound Route 30 and other specific movements within the interchange.
These closures are expected to cause significant backups and delays along the detour paths. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible or to plan for additional travel time. The emphasis is on alertness and cautious driving, especially along the detour routes.
The overall project, slated for completion by September 3, 2027, includes various improvements to the Route 222/Route 30 interchange and the expansion of Route 222 from the interchange northward. This includes the construction of additional lanes on ramps, the widening of Route 222 to six lanes for a stretch, and the replacement and widening of bridges over Route 30. Despite the disruptions, four lanes of traffic will be maintained throughout the project’s duration to mitigate impacts on commuters.
JD Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, is overseeing this $72,173,900 project, which aims to enhance safety and traffic flow through one of Lancaster County’s crucial intersections.
