PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced significant overnight closures on southbound Interstate 95 (I-95) in Center City, Philadelphia. The closures are part of the ongoing construction activities under the $329 million Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) project.
The CAP project aims to replace and expand the covered area over the interstate, enhancing pedestrian and multimodal connections between Center City and the waterfront.
Closure Details:
- From Monday, March 4 to Thursday, March 7, a lane closure is scheduled on southbound I-95 between Market Street and South Street from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
- During the same period, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, I-95 South will be closed between I-676/Callowhill Street (Exit 22) and the Morris Street on-ramp.
- The ramp from I-676 East to I-95 South will also be closed during these hours.
Detour Information:
Motorists and trucks will be directed to follow the posted alternate routes that include using the Girard Avenue Interchange (Exit 23) or Callowhill Street (Exit 22) to access southbound Columbus Boulevard and the on-ramp to I-95 South at Morris Street.
The Market Street ramp to I-95 South, which closed on Monday, February 19, is scheduled to reopen to traffic on Friday, March 8.
Impact on Traffic:
Significant backups and delays are expected on I-95 South, the alternate routes, and several surface streets in the vicinity of the work area. Motorists are advised to avoid the closure area if possible.
Why This Matters:
The overnight closure of I-95 South will enable PennDOT’s contractor to install temporary barriers and restripe the southbound travel lanes. This process will shift traffic away from the median, providing a safe area for crews to begin construction on the new piers at Walnut and Chestnut streets.
The $329 million I-95 CAP Project includes two main components: a new Park at Penn’s Landing and a new signature bridge at South Street. Both will extend over Columbus Boulevard, connecting cyclists and pedestrians to the newly completed Delaware River Trail.
This project represents a significant investment in Philadelphia’s infrastructure, aiming to improve connectivity and accessibility for all city residents. Motorists are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly to avoid potential delays during these necessary construction activities.
