PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has confirmed the continuation of road and bridge construction projects in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia. The $7.8 million project focuses on the replacement of the overhead ramp and structure from southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) to southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).
Starting Monday, December 18 through Thursday, December 21, motorists should expect partial left lane closures on the northbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) ramp at Old York Road between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The closures are necessary for curb, roadway, and drainage improvement work.
Additionally, during these same dates and times, periodic single left lane closures will be established on northbound and southbound U.S. 1 between Wyoming Avenue and 16th Street. This disruption is due to barrier installation and shoulder work. Travelers are advised to account for extra time when passing through these areas or consider using an alternate route to avoid potential backups and delays.
In a significant development, the southbound U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue) ramp will remain closed around the clock through January 2024. The ramp was initially closed for demolition and replacement on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. During this extended closure, southbound U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) drivers are directed to follow a posted detour using Wyoming Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) to reach U.S. 13 (Hunting Park Avenue).
The ongoing project includes replacing the existing single-span, steel plate girder bridge carrying the southbound U.S. 13/Hunting Park Avenue ramp over U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) with a single-span, prestressed, precast concrete bridge. This new structure will provide additional vertical clearance.
Further enhancements incorporate constructing retaining wall extensions on the approaches of the new bridge, performing full-depth paving, and installing and constructing a new sidewalk, ADA curb ramps, a new traffic signal, highway lighting, guiderail, and pavement markings.
The project is fully financed with federal funds, and South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, N.J., is the general contractor. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation urges drivers to exercise caution while navigating through construction zones.
