Major Rehabilitation Project Set to Begin on City Avenue Bridge

Traffic, flagging

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that construction will start Monday, March 10, on a $22.4 million project to rehabilitate the City Avenue (U.S. 1) bridge over the SEPTA Cynwyd Regional Rail Line in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, and Philadelphia.

The bridge, originally constructed in 1909 and widened in 1934, will undergo extensive repairs as part of this initiative. Key improvements include structural rehabilitation of sidewalks, replacement of utility lines, extension of the retaining wall, installation of new stormwater management systems, and a full resurfacing of the roadway.

The project also aims to improve pedestrian access by constructing a new ADA-compliant ramp and stair system, which will enhance connectivity between City Avenue, SEPTA’s Bala Station, and the nearby Parkside Cynwyd Trail.

To accommodate the construction, traffic on City Avenue will be reduced to a single lane in both directions during several stages of the project. Starting March 10 and continuing through April 7, one-lane restrictions will be in place between Bryn Mawr Avenue and 47th Street for excavation and paving operations. The 39,654 daily motorists who travel the corridor should expect delays and are encouraged to allow extra time. Despite the disruptions, access to businesses along the route and train services at Bala Station will remain unaffected.
