LOWER POTTSGROVE TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is set to continue its ambitious project to reconstruct and improve a significant stretch of the U.S. 422 expressway next week. While the initiative promises enhanced safety and travel conditions, Pennsylvania residents should brace for potential traffic backups and delays.
The project focuses on a 1.7-mile section of the expressway between the Sanatoga Interchange and Porter Road in Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County. It includes the replacement of two bridges and reconstruction of both existing and revised alignments on U.S. 422 to improve curve radii, shoulder widths, and vertical clearance.
Starting Monday, February 19, through Thursday, February 22, motorists can expect single lane closures in both directions of U.S. 422 between Evergreen Road and Armand Hammer Boulevard from 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM respectively. These closures will facilitate clearing, grubbing, and drainage installation.
Additionally, intermittent single lane flagging will be in place on Porter Road between High Street and Sanatoga Station Road from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM during these days. A more extensive 24/7 closure will commence on Sanatoga Road between Linfield Road and East High Street from March 4 to April 15 to accommodate water and sewer relocation. During this period, drivers will be directed to use Linfield Road, Evergreen Road, and High Street.
These modifications are part of a broader agenda to enhance the U.S. 422 corridor. The project also involves the construction of sound barriers along portions of westbound U.S. 422, upgrading existing signage, and installing new ones. Additionally, the closed system drainage system and cross culverts throughout the project limits will be replaced, and stormwater management facilities, including two extended detention basins, will be improved.
A highlight of the project is the installation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment and components along the U.S. 422 corridor and on arterial roadways. This technology aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and increase safety by providing real-time traffic information to motorists and traffic management centers.
The current Section M1B project is the seventh venture under PennDOT’s initiative to rebuild and improve the U.S. 422 Bypass near Pottstown. Since 2012, PennDOT has pumped over $260 million into enhancing the U.S. 422 corridor in Montgomery and Chester counties.
While these improvements promise a smoother and safer commute in the long run, motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas in the coming weeks. Backups and delays are expected as construction activities continue. However, all scheduled activities are weather-dependent, and changes may occur based on prevailing conditions.
