MONTGOMERY TWP, PA — As part of a significant initiative to enhance travel and safety, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced ongoing utility work at one of Montgomery County’s busiest crossroads. The $14.2 million project focusing on the Five-Points Intersection—where Route 309 (Bethlehem Pike), Route 463 (Horsham Road/Cowpath Road), and Business U.S. 202 (Doylestown Road) converge—is set to bring about notable traffic disruptions next week.
Motorists should brace for lane closures scheduled for Monday, March 25, and Tuesday, March 26, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, followed by nighttime closures from Wednesday, March 27, through Friday, March 29, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM. The affected stretches include Route 309 between North Wales Road and McLaughlin Road, Route 463 between Lansdale Avenue and North Wales Road, and Business U.S. 202 between Route 309 and Betty’s Avenue. Travelers are advised to anticipate delays, with backups likely as traffic navigates the reduced lanes.
This ambitious project aims to significantly improve the flow of traffic and reduce accident rates at the notoriously congested intersection. By adding additional through lanes on both directions of Route 463 and on southbound Route 309, PennDOT intends to increase the approach lanes to the intersection from 15 to 18. This expansion is expected to alleviate some of the bottleneck effects currently experienced by commuters, especially during peak travel times.
In addition to widening the roadway, the project encompasses a broad scope of enhancements designed to promote safety and efficiency. Upgrades will include the retiming of signals, the installation of sidewalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, guiderails, as well as improvements to stormwater drainage, signage, and pavement markings. Efforts to adjust driveway access and mitigate erosion and sedimentation are also part of the comprehensive plan.
Another key component of the project is aimed at improving conditions for westbound Route 463 motorists turning right onto northbound Business U.S. 202, facilitating smoother transitions and reducing potential conflict points.
Road-Con, Inc., based in West Chester, Chester County, has been contracted to carry out this extensive overhaul, funded entirely through federal resources. As construction progresses, the emphasis on planning and patience among drivers cannot be overstated. With all scheduled activities subject to weather conditions, the possibility of extended work periods remains, potentially exacerbating travel disruptions.
As Montgomery Township gears up for the next phase of this critical infrastructure project, residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed and consider alternative routes or travel times.
