PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has slated a series of bridge inspections for next week that will affect traffic on several major highways in Philadelphia, including Interstate 95 and U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard).
These inspections, which are part of PennDOT’s regular program to ensure the safety and overall condition of the structures, may cause backups and slowdowns. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas.
The first set of inspections will kick off on Tuesday, February 20, between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. During this time, a left lane closure will be in place on Allegheny Avenue between Richmond Street and Bath Street. Simultaneously, there will be a left lane closure on the ramp from the Betsy Ross Bridge to southbound I-95 until 3:00 PM.
On Wednesday, February 21, expect right lane closures on the local lanes of U.S. 1 North (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Bridge Street and Large Street from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This will be followed by a right lane closure on U.S. 1 South (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Large Street and Bridge Street from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. In addition, there will be a right lane closure on the ramp from Aramingo Avenue to southbound I-95 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Thursday, February 22, will see a series of right and left lane closures on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) between Friendship Street and Stahle Street from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Also, a right lane closure will be in place on Walnut Lane between Wissahickon Avenue and Morris Street during the same period.
The inspections will continue on Friday, February 23, with a right lane closure on Hunting Park Avenue North between Clearfield Street and Kelly Drive from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This will be followed by a right lane closure on Hunting Park Avenue South between Kelly Drive and Clearfield Street from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Additionally, there will be a right lane closure on Willits Road between Cloverly Road and Ryerson Road from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
These scheduled activities are weather-dependent, and schedules can shift. PennDOT’s program requires bridges to be inspected at least once every two years. While these inspections may cause short-term inconvenience, the long-term benefit is safer, more efficient travel for Philadelphia’s motorists.
