LANCASTER, PA — The Lancaster Stormers have officially added former Major League infielder Isan Diaz to their lineup for the upcoming 2024 season. Manager Ross Peeples announced the acquisition on Monday, marking Diaz as the first player with Major League experience to sign with the Stormers this year. Lancaster’s team now boasts 23 players under contract as they gear up for another title run.
At just 27 years old, Diaz brings a wealth of experience from his time in the majors, having played four of the last five seasons at the highest level of baseball. His journey through the big leagues includes stints with the Miami Marlins from 2019 to 2021 and more recently, appearances with both the San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers in 2023. The Puerto Rican native, who now calls Massachusetts home, has a career tally of 153 games in the majors, batting .177 with nine home runs to his name.
Diaz’s power at the plate is notable, having gone yard against some of the game’s elite pitchers including Max Scherzer, Noah Syndergaard, and Jacob deGrom. A memorable highlight was his grand slam off Milwaukee’s Patrick Weigel in 2021. Beyond his major league achievements, Diaz has also shown considerable prowess in the minors, hitting over 20 home runs in three different seasons. His minor league resume boasts 125 homers across 732 games, complemented by a solid .261 career batting average.
According to Peeples, “Diaz is a veteran who can play all over the infield.” The manager anticipates utilizing Diaz primarily as a shortstop, bolstered by positive reports on his performance and versatility.
As the Stormers prepare to chase their third consecutive Atlantic League title, Diaz’s experience and skill set are expected to make a significant impact. The team is set to kick off their campaign against Long Island on April 25, with the excitement building towards their home opener at Clipper Magazine Stadium scheduled for Tuesday, April 30 at 6:45 PM. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see how Diaz’s addition will elevate the Stormers’ quest for glory in the 2024 season.
